Yael Naim - New Soul (Atlantic)
Born to Tunisian parents in Paris before moving to Tel Aviv, Yael has not forgotten the classical training which initially led her to seek out other genres.
By teaming up with multi-instrumentalist David Donatien, 'New Soul' manages to feature everything from piano to brass and organ music in its output. Although on paper this may look like a cluttered and odd soundscape, it's expressed as a brittle backbone fleshed out with beautifully clear and pure vocals dancing wistfully around the ears.
Although initially wanting to dump the track in the same box as all the other seemingly mass produced ‘schmindie’ twee that adorns recent ad campaigns, 'New Soul' is actually contradictory yet balanced; warm and fuzzy while being delicately sultry.
It's too easy to draw comparisons with Feist or even Joni Mitchell, but there is a definite continental air breezing through the folk roots on her self-titled album that elevates Yael above her contemporaries.
Rating: 3/5

Yael Naim - New Soul (Atlantic)
New Soul may already be recognised for its use in the new Mac Book Air advert, but it doesn’t stop it from being a standout folk-pop track in its own right.
