The Black Keys - Same Old Thing (Nonesuch Records)
Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney once again deliver a single bursting with confidence and charisma. Taken from the album Attack & Release, 'Same Old Thing' is blues-rock at its most laid back and glorious.
The single contains a jazz flute, but don’t let that put you off. It’s fairly underused, so the single doesn’t quite sound like Ron Burgundy fluting his way around the jazz bar in the film Anchorman. The guitar thankfully takes the front seat to provide a distinctive groove throughout the track.
Paradoxically, the lo-fi sound which the Black Keys utilise makes their music sound fresher and more innovative than their contemporaries. Auerbach is a fan of analogue recording equipment, as well as the age-old 'album a year' recording concept - just like it used to be with rock bands in the 60s and 70s. The pair have produced seven studio albums since they formed in 2002, so they already have an extensive and impressive back-catalogue.
Listening to the Black Keys is an absolute joy, so it’s no surprise that the band’s admirers include the likes of Thom Yorke, Josh Homme and Robert Plant. Their brand of blues-rock has a timeless quality which is reminiscent of the great artists over the years that have combined the genres of rock and soul: Led Zeppelin, Clapton, Hendrix, and Deep Purple. As far as two-piece bands are concerned, you won’t find a better one out there at the moment.
If you enjoy this single, buy yourself their whole back-catalogue and prepare for the (re)discovery of a new favourite 'underrated' cult band.
Effortlessly cool.
